Grannie's Cartoons

All About Grannie

Grannie is a long-time AirHead. The year is around 2043, and Grannie is 90-something-years-old. (She says a lady never tells her exact age.) Grannie resides in the Sunny Acres assisted living home, but she's fairly happy here, getting by on her determination to survive, her will to carry on, and her love for fun in life. Unfortunately, it wasn't always this way, but that part of the story is told in the cartoons.

Grannie has loved the music group Air Supply for decades, and she's not about to stop now. Evidently, sometimes that gets Grannie into a bit of trouble. However, she seems to always get her way and come out right on top.

FYI: This is how the Grannie Cartoons came about. Before he passed away several years ago, my dad was in an assisted living home and then a rehabilitation center for patients with Alzheimer's disease. What surprised me was, just like my dad, the other patients there had led interesting and varied lives prior to getting Alzheimer's and prior to their old age. Once I learned about the patients' backgrounds, I discovered people who had enjoyed life-long careers as teachers, doctors, lawyers, in business, in sports, entertainers, artists and the like. One man was written up, on a whole page in our newspaper as having been a famous sculptor from Russia! No matter how ill these people became and how severe their memory loss, even when they no longer knew their own names, the one thing that they had left was that they still appreciated and loved music!

Also, my mother was in an assisted living home before she passed away. Somehow her place reminded me somewhat of life in a college dorm. Some of the residents stay in their rooms a lot and some come to the living area and socialize. A couple of the ladies are on the lookout for boyfriends! Every resident is an amazing person, each with his or her own unique story and interesting background, whether they led a difficult life or a pleasant one. All of their stories are rich and varied. Everyone has a unique personality. Another interesting fact however, is that they all love music - especially "The Lawrence Welk Show".

Grannie Cartoon characters are made up of a combination of the personalities of these amazing older people in our world that I've met. These cartoons are made in honor of all the elderly everywhere, and in honor of Lawrence Welk, (thank's to Mr. Welk, for putting a song in so many receptive hearts for many decades now). The Grannie Cartoons is also in honor of the fantastic group Air Supply (thanks to them for making music a part of our lives and hearts for the last three decades).

Sincerely, S.O.

P.S. I love you Mom & Dad.
